Golfing is one of Hermanus’ most popular sports and when you see the spectacular course, you can understand why. Located on Main Road, roughly 120 km from the most southern tip of Africa, the Hermanus Golf Club is regarded as one of the top courses in South Africa and a “must play” under the country’s pro golfers.
Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, the course boasts majestic views of both the ocean and mountains. The surrounding trees and greenery is home to an abundance of animal life, and while out on the fairway you’ll constantly catch yourself admiring the natural Cape flora lining the course. What’s more, the striking water features, rock formations and large number of trees set the scene for a brilliant day of golfing out in Hermanus.
Until recently the course only had the usual 18 holes before South Africa’s most respected and top golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, took it under hand. Today the course offers golfers an astounding 27 holes of pure golfing entertainment, giving them the opportunity to linger a little longer in this magical environment. Like any pro golfer will tell you, the brand new course design and shape of the holes are spectacular. What was once a pretty average course is now a modern, clean-cut sporting Utopia that’s pleasing on the eye and takes the challenge to a whole new level. The sixth hole has been ranked as one of the most challenging holes in the country, making the course so much more appealing to the pros.
Just outside of Hermanus you’ll also find Arabella Golf Estate – another one of Peter Matkovich’s architectural masterpieces. While just as spectacular as the Hermanus Golf Course, this one is surrounded by natural beauty of a different kind – a vast blue lagoon, mountains and enchanting forests that paint the picture of pure tranquillity.
The Arabella course is designed around the concept of balance, offering just the right combination of challenge and enjoyment, that keeps the pros coming back for more but doesn’t scare off the amateur. The rolling greens are expertly laid out and offer spectacular vantage points to truly soak up the natural beauty while playing a few holes. Selecting the very best holes is an impossible task as each and every one is expertly designed and boasts views of either mountains or lagoon. The ninth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes are worth mentioning however as they run parallel to the lagoon and are a joy to play.
