Sports and Leisure Sports The Hermanus Yacht Club controls sailing activities in the lagoon area. For divers the opportunity exists to face the notorious Great White Shark from the safe confines of a metal cage. Fishermen from all over the country are attracted by good fishing as the sea and lagoons abound with galjoen, steenbras, cob, stumpnose, etc. The Hermanus Golf course is noted by overseas visitors as one of the most pleasing courses they have played on. Within short driving distance, 4 further courses invite keen golfers to demonstrate their prowess. Other sport clubs offer rugby, cricket, tennis, bowls, squash, netball, cycling and soccer. The mountains of Hermanus provide an attraction for many hang-gliders who come from far and wide to jump from the mountains on Rotary Drive, where the scenic beauty is unequalled and must be seen to be believed. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve boasts more than 50 kms of hiking trails though pristine mountain fynbos. Guided walks are available by appointment. Leisure The beaches of Hermanus are a sunworshippers dream with soft white sands. The beaches range from small protected coves, such as Langbaai and Kammabaai to long expanses of sand, such as Grotto Beach, which stretches all the way to the mouth of the Klein Rivier Lagoon and De Plaat (renowned as one of the best fishing spots). Kammabaai, also known as Nanny's Beach and Lover's Cove, is just alongside Voeklip Beach and is extremely popular for surfers. Sandbaai beach is dotted with rock pools full of marine creatures and is particularly popular at low tide when swimming is safe. It is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. Onrus beach is ideal for the whole family, especially body boarders and surfers. Flanked by a lagoon it provides a perfect playground for children. Brekvis Bay at Vermont lies at the boundary of the Vermont Nature Reserve and provides a perfect setting for picnicking. Flanked by high dunes, the beach is sheltered and has the freshness of unspoilt beauty. Magnificent cliff path walks along the sea are a popular pasttime and provide an easy view of the Southern Right Whales which are an endless source of delight to locals and visitors alike. Other Activities One of the most exciting experiences is to go Shark Cage Diving. The boats leave daily (weather permitting) from Franskraal close to Gansbaai, some 50 kms from Hermanus. Here one sees the sharks close up to the boat and for the brave at heart, one can go down in a cage to view these great whites 'eye to eye'. An experience not to be missed!
