Tourism and Tourist Attractions

Tourism

The Old Harbour, the new harbour, the museum, the photographic museum and the Whale House are some of the fascinating "must sees".
The scenic beauty of Walker Bay from Rotary Drive is an experience not to be missed.

Nestled amongst the trees just above the popular Onrus beach is a Greek Chapel which is a popular visitors attraction and visitors are welcome to enjoy a quiet meditation in the cool interior.

Several widely acclaimed wines have been produced in the beautiful Hemel-and-Aarde Valley in past years, and wine lovers are encouraged to sample some of these by following the Hermanus Wine Route. The cool maritime climate and soil composition combines to provide the ideal location for Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines. Wine tasting is provided on weekdays and a drive through this beautiful countryside is well worthwhile.

Old Harbour

This natural harbour, formerly the main landing point of the fleet of small fishing boats, is one of a focal point of interest to visitors. The cliff-top entrance to the harbour offers visitors a panoramic view of Walker Bay and also provide an excellent vantage point for whalewatching. The Old Harbour Museum has several exhibitions depicting the history of fishing and whaling in the area. The tremendous interest in whale watching led to the creation of the Whale House by the Old Harbour Museum.

New Harbour

Sporting a magnificent restaurant on the rocks, one can enjoy the harvest of the sea - crayfish, mussels, perlemoen etc. Fishing boats lie anchored along the quay and many a fresh fish can be bought from the keen fishermen. The harbour has many seafood factories in operation as well as an excellent fish shop which sells the daily catch to suit all palates.
